At the Ibex Grand Slam, we invite you to stalk the four subspecies of Iberian ibex in their natural habitat, accompanied by local guides with years of experience and in-depth knowledge of the area to guarantee an unforgettable day of hunting.

You can also seek an even greater achievement by stalking the six species of goat included in the Capra World Slam. A greater challenge for the more ambitious.

Ibex of Gredos

40°14′N 5°17′O
The Gredos Ibex is one of the jewels of mountain hunting. Recognizable by its lyre-shaped horns, with a closed and elegant curve, it also boasts a coat that varies with the season, darkening in winter to almost black in the oldest specimens.

This subspecies primarily inhabits the Sierra de Gredos, an environment of high altitudes, steep ridges, and breathtaking panoramas, a short distance from Madrid, although it can also be found in other areas due to its reintroduction in other parts of central and northern Spain, such as Las Batuecas, Riaño, Ancares, Mampodre, and the Sierra de Guadarrama.
Stalking is technical, demanding, and full of excitement, thanks to the abundance of animals and the challenging terrain.

During the rutting season, between November and January, the males become more active and descend to more accessible areas, allowing hunters to observe their competitive behavior and more easily locate mature, well-developed specimens.
*Ibex permits are very limited and in high demand, so it is recommended to book one year in advance. Please check availability for bookings made less than one year in advance.
Region
Sierra of Gredos
*The hunting area where the stalking will take place will depend on the animals sighted by our guide to guarantee the success of the hunt.
Hunting season
October – May
*Provided it is permitted.
Best time to hunt them: (Rutting season) Late November to January.
Habits
The Iberian ibex is one of the main attractions of high-mountain hunting, and pursuing it presents a physical and mental challenge. Hunting this species is done by stalking, requiring observation, waiting, and moving with great discretion. The days usually begin at first light along rocky trails. At that time, the males are found at lower elevations. Once an adult is spotted, the stalk begins, trying to get close enough without being detected to ensure a good shot.

Regarding its behavior, this species shows a great capacity for adapting to the terrain. Agile like few others, it can climb seemingly impossible cliffs with ease. Although it does not undertake defined migrations, it can cover vast distances depending on the season and conditions. It is common to see females with their young in large groups, while adult males remain in smaller groups. Its diet is hardy and undemanding, depending on what the environment provides. The mating season takes place between November and January, a key time when males engage in intense disputes to win the favor of females, displaying strength and dominance in each confrontation.

Ibex of Beceite

40°49′N 0°16′E
The Maestrazgo Ibex is the largest of the Spanish ibex subspecies, renowned for its spectacular antlers. Its horns are unmistakable: large, ringed, and spread in a palm-like shape, earning it the nickname "palmero" (palm-grower). Two main horn shapes are distinguished: one more spread, "airplane" shaped, and another lyre-shaped, though more spread than that of the Gredos Ibex.

Of strong and robust build, its coat displays grayish-brown tones that vary throughout the year. In winter, adult males may acquire a darker coloration, although they rarely turn completely black. Features such as the beard, larger size, and darker tone allow males to be distinguished from females.
*Ibex permits are very limited and in high demand, so it is recommended to book one year in advance. Please check availability for bookings made less than one year in advance.
Region
Maestrazgo area, between Teruel, Castellón and Tarragona.

Ibex Sierra Nevada

37°03′N 3°20′O
The Sierra Nevada ibex is distinguished by its agile and elegant silhouette, with long horns that curve sharply backward, forming a very characteristic ram-like profile. Although smaller than its northern relatives, such as those from Gredos or Beceite, it is more robust than the Ronda ibex . Its coat is lighter, and its build, while strong, is lighter and better adapted to the rugged terrain it inhabits.

Its environment is one of the most impressive on the Iberian Peninsula: the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the highest in Europe outside the Alps, and also found in other mountain ranges in Granada, Almería, and Jaén. With peaks approaching 3,000 meters and a steep landscape, this area offers an authentic and challenging mountain hunting experience. Despite the altitude and rugged terrain, access is surprisingly easy thanks to a network of well-maintained trails. Located very close to Granada and coastal areas, this destination allows you to combine hunting and sightseeing in a single trip.
This subspecies begins its mating season earlier than those in the north, usually at the end of October, and during this period the males are more active and visible.

Ronda ibex

36°45′N 5°10′O
The Ronda ibex is the smallest of the four Spanish ibex subspecies, both in body size and in the development of its trophy. Even so, hunting it presents one of the greatest challenges, due to the low population density and the rugged terrain it inhabits. Its horns, shorter and straighter, grow in a shape close to a "V," with a less pronounced and more vertical curve than in other varieties. The coat is usually lighter and more uniform.

It is found in the mountains of Málaga, especially in the Serranía de Ronda and Sierra Blanca, with some populations in mountainous areas of Cádiz. These are wooded areas with rocky and steep terrain, ideal for more technical stalking.
The rut takes place between the end of October and November, a period in which the males are most visible and active. This hunt is a major tourist attraction due to its location on the Costa del Sol, its proximity to Seville and Córdoba, where visitors can experience and enjoy both the beaches and the rich culture and gastronomy.
